How the Group Started. Legend has it that the Group started as a result of a conversation between Jim Jepson and Gordon Smith who were concerned that Club Photography did not give monochrome photography a fair crack of the whip. They decided to put a notice in the photographic press to ask if there were sufficient enthusiasts in the Northampton area to form a special interest group. As a result a meeting was held on the 3rd March 1999 at Earls Barton Church hall, which twenty-two people attended. It was agreed that there was enough interest to hold regular monthly meetings. It was decided that the activities of the Group should not lie competitive. But should promote an appreciation of the monochrome image. From this inaugural meeting the Group has gone from strength to strength. And now has a healthy mix- of traditional and digital workers. We have supported numerous Open Exhibitions with a high percentage of acceptances.
As an affiliated member of the Midland Counties Photographic Federation we support many MCPF activities and are rapidly gaining the reputation of being an outward looking group. This encourages lecturers to visit us and our programme reflects this in the high quality of lecturer we attract.
We hold regular exhibitions at various venues in the region details of which will be found on our programme page. Our intention is to allow members of the public to view, and hopefully enjoy our work.
Despite our high profile, which we continue to develop, we still have concern for those who are new to the field of monochrome photography, and support beginners in both traditional, and digital fields. |
